I believe PDF is one of the most underestimated book formats. Mostly it’s associated with business documents and papers in the normal 8.5 X 11 paper size or the slightly smaller A4 paper size. And it certainly works well with those sizes.
It’s not considered a good fit for eBooks because the text isn’t reflowable. That is a shortcoming, but it doesn’t have to stop you from creating eBooks with it.
It seems the main resistance is that it’s difficult to read PDF books with small devices like Smartphones because by the time you reduce the paper size to fit the screen it’s difficult to read the text.
While that seems an insurmountable problem, it’s not. Why would you be stuck with the 8.5 X 11 size or any other size for creating your original manuscript? Whether you use Word or any other program, you choose the size of the document. So, why not choose a size that fits the device. I suggest choosing a size that fits the Smartphone with a large enough font to be easy to read. I like to use Georgia 12 pt and a standard paper size called Envelope DL or the custom size 4.5 inches by 7.5 inches. Either one fits fine on smartphones and many other displays.
